International Standards Workshop
for the Global Oil & Gas Industry
in Malaysia
23-24 February 2009
The International Association of Oil and Gas Producers (OGP) in association with Petronas Carigali, Department of Standards Malaysia and SIRIM Berhard organised this workshop for professionals working in the Malaysian oil & gas industry that make use of standards in their work.

Objectives
This workshop was designed to provide professionals of oil & gas companies, national standards bodies, service providers, the supply industry and rule-making authorities with the opportunity to broaden their understanding of international standardisation activities for this globally important industry sector.
The workshop reviewed and discussed the international and national standardisation work, the role of the authorities and standardisation bodies in ongoing standardisation activities and the experiences within other relevant countries and regions of adopting such standards for the oil and gas sector, including the challenges facing harmonisation of company and local standards with International Standards.

Provide an overview of the international standardisation process with particular focus on the efforts, work and products arising out of ISO Technical Committee No 67 that focus on standards for “Materials, equipment and offshore structures for the petroleum, petrochemical and natural gas industries”, used both upstream and downstream.

Provide an up-to-date overview on the importance and benefits of standardisation in oil & gas industry and explore the activities and experiences of international, regional, national and company standardisation in this field and how Malaysia can participate and influence these standards.

Develop a clear picture of the benefits of adoption of International Standards, identify the difficulties facing international standardisation and suggest effective solutions in this regard.

Identify and define the Malaysian oil & gas sector standardisation needs in view of its growing oil & gas industry and ongoing globalisation efforts.

Provide an opportunity for a detailed Roundtable and Q&A session with national professionals of oil & gas companies, national standards bodies, service providers, the supply industry and international representatives.
