A contribution from Michel Olagnon to the (metocean) discussion on wave spectral shapes and what we do and don't know. This led to the first of the two JIPs (outlined below) being proposed.

Two JIPs are presently being discussed as a result of the workshop.

The first is the West Africa Swell Project (WASP)

This is a proposal to examine the sea conditions offshore West Africa in some detail. Advantage will be taken of both measured and hindcast wave data which are available to the industry. The main studies which are proposed will consist of:

  • A comparison of Measurements and Hindcasts

  • Comparison of sea/swell separation schemes

  • Joint Environmental Contours

  • Shape of the Swell Peak in the Power Spectrum

  • Directional Characteristics of Swell

  • Response Spectra

  • Stationarity of the sea state

  • Infragravity Waves

The second proposed study is the Squall Wind Measurement Program

This study is focussed on obtaining more accurate information on squall wind conditions offshore West Africa. A 1-2 year measurement program is envisaged using instruments on a platform complex offshore Nigeria, followed by a detailed set of analyses and examination of the wind spectra and the wind gust statistics.
